So what sort of names are we talking about? They’ve had childhood dreams of being a QVC host and they’re hitting me up at random, ‘I hear you have a shopping network? Can I come and host?’ ![]() The more people that hear about us, they want to get their products on the air and these hosts, these influencers, these celebrities, these people that I should have no business talking to or having them on my channel are coming in and it’s like a dream for them. We’re up to six hours a day right now and then next week we’ll be up to seven hours a day and streaming seven days a week. We were getting bored of selling the same 20 products over and over again so we scaled back the hours, scaled back on everybody’s exhaustion so we are now on four hours a day and slowly building that up to five hours a day then six hours a day. JS: We started 24 hour a day but then we found that we needed more sellers. You’re not like the other shopping networks that are 24 hours a day. We’ve been going non-stop ever since, 7 days a week, we haven’t had a day off.ĭescribe the schedule. We pitched it on November 13 last year, I got the call back on November 14 and were live on YouTube and Twitch on Black Friday, November 27. Just enough to get us through the holiday season and a couple of extra months after to prove the concept, get some sales going, show some traction so that once we had proved it we could go out and cast a wider net for talent we could bring in, executives in sales and marketing and media industries and really turn it into something. What kind of capital did you have to get it off the ground and up and running? Prove it.’ That’s basically what he said, here’s some money and prove it. Our second phone call was Allen Debevoise, the founder of Machinima, and we explained what we wanted to do and he said, ‘Let’s do it!’ He called me back the next and was, like, ‘Let’s go. So we called a few people up and said we were throwing the idea around with no real business plan, a back-of-napkin pitch with a Powerpoint presentation we put together in a day of what QVC 2.0 would look like. She said it was the strongest pitch out that she’d heard that day and asked Efren if I was for real and suggested we go for it. SO I explained about the live streaming and selling stuff and helping fan sites move merchandise. She got out of the taxi and hunted down Efren and I and said we’d blown her mind and wanted to know more. So I said, ‘I’ve got one for you, it’s a total joke but what if there was QVC for cool ****? It’s just a joke but thank you for coming,’ and I put her in the taxi and I walked back in. It was hundreds and they said everybody in the room looked at them like they were money. As a joke, at the end of the day, I was escorting some of the venture capitalist panelists to their cabs and I asked how may times they’d been pitched to that day. I worked with TechZulu, one of my founding partners in XSN is Efren Toscano who is also their CEO, and they were putting on an event where a bunch of LA startups got in front of investors. JS: It’s a crazy story how this came together. QVC-style.Īnd what kind of response did you get when you pitched it? The last three years we’ve been averaging one live streaming crowd funding telethon a month and we were getting millions of dollars in donations so we wondered if there was something we could do on a daily basis. I realized that there was something there. JS: For the last couple of years I’ve been helping other people do live streaming of events like the Grammys pre-show, concerts and product launches and every time we were going live we had this huge audience who were really motivated and the then the event was done and no-one wanted to continue on it. I caught up with XSN’s CEO, Justin Sewell, to find out why the industry’s biggest stars are desperate to get involved, what their wildly popular Drunk Shopping show is all about and how a low six figures investment can yield up to 5,000 transactions and $650,000 in sales in just one five hour period. People have associated it with the alt-right, Neo-Nazis and Holocaust deniers, as well as those part of the Red-Brown coalition, due to there being sections devoted to them. But XSN is not just about flogging merchandise. Several Internet memes have started at 4chan, including lolcats and rickrolling. One of the boards on the site, called "/b/", is dedicated to random topics and is often mentioned in media. ![]() When the site started, it was for discussing anime and manga, but now many other topics are discussed.
